Program Type:

Telehealth Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Billing Code:

CPT 90853 (Group Psychotherapy — Telehealth)

Schedule:

  • 3 days per week

  • 3 hours per session

  • 16-week program (48 total sessions)

Delivery:

100% HIPAA-compliant, encrypted video platform

Population Served:

California veterans with substance use disorders and co-occurring PTSD, anxiety, or depression.

Closed Cohort Model

Veterans start together and complete together — no new additions after Week 1.

Session Fidelity

Every session follows the exact same structure:

  • Opening & attendance

  • One-word check-in

  • Lesson Part 1

  • Break

  • Lesson Part 2

  • Skills practice

  • Checkout & safety

Safety Protocols

If a crisis occurs, facilitators:

  1. Pause the session

  2. Move the veteran to a breakout room

  3. Notify the Clinical Supervisor immediately

  4. Supervisor manages all clinical decisions

  5. Facilitator stabilizes the group

  6. Documentation completed and submitted same day

This ensures clinical integrity and rapid response.

Appropriateness & Referrals

Veterans Who Are a Good Fit

  • Mild–moderate substance use disorders

  • Co-occurring PTSD/anxiety/depression

  • High motivation for structure

  • Stable enough for telehealth IOP

  • Able to engage on camera

  • Seeking skills-focused treatment

Not Appropriate For

  • Veterans requiring detox

  • Active psychosis or high instability

  • Severe cognitive impairment

  • Veterans who cannot maintain camera use

  • Veterans requiring inpatient level of care

Referral Process

HELM Recovery accepts referrals through the VA Community Care Network (TriWest).

To refer a veteran:

  1. Request authorization for CPT 90853 telehealth IOP

  2. Include HELM Recovery’s organizational NPI: 1164383352

  3. Upload authorization into the VA system

  4. Notify our team so we can schedule intake and orientation
