About the Program

A: HELM Recovery is a 16-week intensive outpatient substance abuse treatment program specifically designed for California veterans. We combine Matrix Model and Seeking Safety evidence-based approaches delivered via secure telehealth.

A: HELM Recovery was founded by Lawrence B. Librando, MSL, a Navy veteran with 24 years of service and proven healthcare leadership experience, specializing in evidence-based treatment programs and systematic operational excellence

A: HELM is both a nautical term (the steering mechanism of a ship) and represents our mission to help veterans navigate their recovery journey. Our tagline is "Navigating Healing Together."

Eligibility & Enrollment

A: California veterans with substance use disorders who:
Require intensive outpatient level of care
Are located in California during treatment
Have access to computer/tablet/smartphone with internet
Have private space for confidential sessions
Are motivated for recovery

A: No. We meet you where you are and help you work toward your recovery goals. However, you should not be intoxicated during sessions.

A: Yes. We specialize in co-occurring disorders, particularly PTSD and substance use disorders. Our program is specifically designed to address both simultaneously.

A: VA referral is preferred but not always required. Contact us to discuss your specific situation.

A: Perfect! That's exactly why we offer telehealth. You can participate from anywhere in California with internet access.
Program Details

A: The main program is 16 weeks (4 months). Optional continuing care support is available after completion.

A: Three 3-hour group sessions per week - Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Session times are scheduled based on cohort needs.

A: Each 3-hour session includes:
Check-in with fellow veterans
Education component on recovery topics
Group discussion and peer support
Skills practice and homework assignment

A: The program focuses on group therapy (research shows group is highly effective for substance use disorders). Individual progress monitoring sessions are included as needed.

A: Yes! Family education sessions are offered during Weeks 5-12. Family members are invited and encouraged to participate.

A: Yes. Recovery happens between sessions, not just during them. Homework helps you practice skills and apply learning to daily life. Homework typically takes 15-30 minutes per assignment.

Clinical Approach

A: The Matrix Model is a structured, evidence-based treatment approach with over 30 years of research. It combines cognitive-behavioral therapy, relapse prevention, family education, and social support development.

A: Seeking Safety is an evidence-based treatment specifically designed for co-occurring PTSD and substance use disorders. It focuses on creating safety in four areas: emotional, physical, behavioral, and thinking.

A: Research shows 44.6% of veterans with PTSD also have substance use disorders. Matrix Model provides structure and addresses addiction; Seeking Safety addresses trauma. Together, they create comprehensive treatment.

A: Yes. All counselors receive training in military cultural competency. Our founder is a Navy veteran, and all groups include only veterans.

A: All counselors hold current California CADC 2 or CADC 3 (Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor) certification. They receive specialized training in Matrix Model, Seeking Safety, and veteran cultural competency.

A: No. Our program is effective for all substances including alcohol, opioids, stimulants, marijuana, prescription drugs, and multiple substances.

A: We coordinate with your VA providers who prescribe MAT medications (like Suboxone, Vivitrol, etc.). We support and integrate MAT into the recovery process but don't prescribe medications ourselves.

A: Relapse is often part of recovery. Contact your counselor immediately at (951) 290-7317. We'll work with you to get back on track without judgment. Honesty about relapse helps us help you.

A: We encourage working toward abstinence, but we meet you where you are. You should not be intoxicated during sessions. Honesty about your substance use helps us provide appropriate support.

A: Yes. We offer optional continuing care including alumni support groups, booster sessions, and ongoing care coordination with VA providers.
